Supervision

A common practice among psychotherapists is to hire an experienced colleague to provide supervision. Supervision involves meeting on a regular basis to discuss with your supervisor the work you are doing with your clients. It is a time to bring up any difficult, confusing, or unclear elements of the relationships with your clients, and receive objective evaluation and guidance.

If you are doing relaxation massage, you probably do not need supervision. If you are doing medical massage, you likewise probably do not need supervision. However, if you are regularly working with survivors of abuse, or touch trauma, supervision may be an important part of your professional life. Work such as this, which can evoke strong and unpredictable feelings in the client, requires a degree of attention and skill that may not be natural to you unless you have had specific training in working with clients such as these.

Even with less sensitive clients, supervision may be helpful to a practitioner in developing communication skills that allow clients to be heard more fully about how they need the therapeutic relationship to change. This type of supervision is akin to coaching, in which a more experienced practitioner can show you opportunities you may be missing to listen more carefully to your clients’ needs and provide your clients with a more comfortable and effective relationship. This can have a very positive effect on your practice, improving the effectiveness of your work and helping with client retention.
